Popular Misconceptions of Rug Storage

Most individuals believe that to store a rug properly, it must be rolled tightly and wrapped in solid plastic sheeting. Once you’ve accomplished these two tasks, you can store your rug anywhere. Unfortunately, this advice may lead to mold and mildew damage.

Another popular misconception is to roll the rugs and store them in brown kraft paper. Also, a poor choice as insects enjoy the taste of brown kraft paper on their way to destroying your rug.

Do’s and Dont’s of Rug Storage

Rugs should never be stored folded for any period of time, as this can cause the foundation yarns to stress and permanently stretch them out or crease your rugs. This is also why rugs should never be stored standing up. Despite what you see in some pictures or rug stores, the weight of the rug crushing on itself at the bottom damages the fibers. There are ways to care for rug fringes, but preventing them will save you time and money.

Never store rugs outside, in a garage, attic, basement, or outbuilding. Rugs are dust magnets and can become very heavy from the dry dust, silt, and atmospheric soiling that will find itself lodged in the cuticles of your rugs which is almost impossible to remove completely and can cause permanent damage to your rug’s longevity and luster.

To store your rug correctly, you should roll it loosely against the grain (as if petting a cat from its tail to its head) and store it in a climate-controlled environment. This will lessen the likelihood of insects or other critters getting to your rugs, or your rugs will collect moisture and develop mold or mildew over time.
