How Neglect Can Ruin Your Wool Rugs

How To Clean Dirt & Debris From Rugs

Dangers of Dirt & Debris

When a wool rug is neglected for years, the accumulated dirt and debris can become embedded in the cuticles of the fibers, making it difficult to remove them without causing further damage. If the rug is not regularly cleaned of dirt, debris, dander, pet hair and stains, the fibers can become matted and tangled, leading to a rough, unpleasant texture and become a buffet for insects! If the rug is neglected for a long enough period of time, more than two years, the fibers can begin to break down, and the colors can become permanently altered by staining or oxidation.

How To Keep A Rug In Good Condition

In order to keep your rug in good condition, it’s important to remove dirt and debris regularly. This can be accomplished by using a vacuum with the rotating beater bar turned off or a vacuum that doesn’t contain a beater bar or, you can use a soft-bristled broom or brush to sweep dirt from the rug. Additionally, all rugs should be hand washed annually by a professional who is specializes in cleaning fine rugs. Cleaning rugs is never a one-size fits all job! Each rug has its own idiosyncrasies and challenges!
